    • Introduction of Online Sponsored-Link Auction Theory
      Yeon-Koo Che, Jinwoo Kim, So Yoon Ahn

         This paper introduces the theory of auctions that are used to sell online sponsored-links. For this, we first provide an overview of the internet advertising markets and a brief survey of auction theory. We then study the GSP auction format, which is widely used for the practical sale of sponsored-links, by reviewing the recent theoretical development regarding the equilibrium and performance of the GSP format. Also, we investigate how the performance of GSP format is affected by problems such as budget constraint and click fraud, and suggest the issues for future research.

    • The Long Run Trend of the Effects of Labor Unions on Firm Profitability: 1981-2007
      Jaymin Lee, Joonmo Cho

         This paper analyzes the effect of unions on firm profitability from 2001 to 2007. The paper investigates the difference among the authoritarian period (1981), democratization period (1988-96), and the post-crisis period (1999-2007) alongside the difference between very large firms and the other firms. During the authoritarian period, unions failed to lower the profitability of very large firms while they lowered the profitability of the other firms. During the democratization period, unions lowered profitability of both groups of firms. After the crisis, unions lower the profitability of very large firms while unions fail to lower the profitability of the other firms.

    • Macroeconomy -Focusing on Presidential Elections and General Elections
      Minjeong Han, Youngduk Kim

         This paper analyze the effects of political uncertainty, which is followed by election, on economic activity. It does by separating the presidential election and the parliamentary election because economic agents feel different uncertainty on election according to the voting object. We judge that political uncertainty on election is related to interest in election, and so use voter turnout as an variable exposing uncertainty instead of an election dummy variable. The results estimated by using ECM show equipment investment growth rate decreases before and after presidential election but household consumption growth rate increases. They react more sensitively to presidential election than parliamentary election. Also change of equipment investment growth rate is larger than that of household consumption growth rate.

    • A Study on Electric Power National Management System During the Late Japanese Colonial Period
      Jinseok Oh

         This paper examines the determination process of the electric power national management policy during the early 1940's. The Japanese government commenced the electric power national management with the foundation of the Electric Power Administration and the establishment of the Japanese electric generation and transmission Co. during the late 1930's, and ordered the unitary control over the electric power to the Choseon Government-General for the formation of the electric power control system over the whole Yen-Block. However, the officials of the Chesinguk [Communication and Postal Bureau] disapproved this order with mentioning the achievement of existing electric power control policy. The Real Reason was amakudari[ô¸Ë½] of the officials of the Chesinguk.
         The colonial government could not refuse the electric power national management no more by the strengthening of the order of Japanese government. The colonial government made the Siksanguk [Industrial Promotion Bureau] prepare the electric power national management by reassigning the Electric Dept. from the Chesinguk to the Siksanguk. Meanwhile, the electric companies wanted to evade the national control and maintain their monopolistic positions. The colonial government held the Choseon imsi jeollyok josahoe [Temporary Survey Committee on Choseon Electricity] and heard the opinions of the electric companies. Consequently the Choseon Electric Management Act was proclaimed and the Choseon Jeonup Co. [Choseon Electric Co.] was established for the purpose of the consolidation of the electric generation and the electric transmission companies. By the way, the ownership and management of the newly established Choseon Electric Company was entrusted the Japanese Nitrogen or the Japanese zaibatsu as a matter of fact. This case showed "the government-zaibatsu combination" during the late Japanese Colonial Period.

    • Microfinance as a Market-Friendly Strategy for Poverty Reduction
      Jonghyun Park

         Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank are famous for microfinance model that has offered a new strategy for poverty reduction. The message which the poor could be a master of his own life and become a successful entrepreneur by the help of financial lever was a decisive factor for the astonishing growth of microfinance industry. Although microfinance model of Grameen Bank did not succeed in keeping its promise to make the poor successful entrepreneurs, it could contribute to the poverty alleviation by means of offering saving, human capital and social capital to the poor.

    FDI of EU and USA and Employment Effects in Korea
    Doowon Lee, Hyeon-Seung Huh
    Pages 179-199
  • Abstract ( Eng | Kor ) || PDF
    •    After the outbreak of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, the Korean economy has aggressively engaged in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Inward FDI amounted to a total of $116 billion during 1998-2007, which was about six times larger than a decade ago. EU and the USA were the major contributors, accounting for roughly 62% of the total FDI into Korea. In theory, inward FDI can generate positive effects of creating jobs, enhancing productivity, and promoting exports. The present paper aims to look at the employment effects of FDI in the Korean labor market. Specially, we complement previous studies by empirically examining whether firms invested by EU and the USA exhibit different patterns in generating jobs. According to the fixed effect panel analysis, EU-invested firms indeed have low elasticity of employment to sales relative to USA-invested firms. It implies that EU-invested firms in Korea have changed the number of employment more cautiously than USA-invested firms as sales fluctuate.

    Input-Output Multiplier Analysis through the Decomposition by Factors of the Leontief Inverse: A Regional Case Study on the Korean Economy
    Ho Un Gim, Koonchan Kim
    Pages 201-248
  • Abstract ( Eng | Kor ) || PDF
    •    The Leontief inverse , also termed as the output requirements matrix for final demand, gave a rise to the formulation of the ordinary input-output multipliers. In this paper, we discuss on the existence and concept of four useful input and output requirements matrices: the Leontief inverse, the output requirements matrix for output, , obtained from the decomposition by factors of the Leontief inverse, and two input requirements matrices and for final demand and output respectively. This paper then focuses on the formulation and analysis of various input-output multipliers based on these four requirements matrices; the multipliers based on and measure the total requirements of changes in final demand and the multipliers based on and compute the total requirements of changes in gross output. A unifying framework that describes completely how these four requirements matrices are related to inputs, output, and final demand is presented, and a comprehensive empirical analysis is performed in the Korean economy to study the difference of the effects of these newly defined multipliers.
