    Exchange Rate, Inflation and the Demand for Money in an Open Economy: Case of Korea
    Keun Jon Chung, Tong Hun Lee
    Pages 121-135
  • Abstract || PDF
    •    In developing countries with limited access to foreign financial markets, a challenge in exchange rates may affect the demand for money via a change in expected inflation through the real market. In additon, a persisiten inflation inherent in the development process may also affect the demand for money. Using Korea as an example, Our study shows these effects estimationg a general money demand function that incorporates the partial adjustment mechanisms of both money demand and price level. Thus. the method and results of this paper differ from those of previous studies on money demand in open economics.
    Optimal Trade Policies and Mutual Tariff Reductions under Fator-Market Distortions
    Dong-cheon Shin
    Pages 137-149
  • Abstract || PDF
    •    The mutual tariff reductions from a Nash equlibrium of the tariff retaliation game. I.e.. the movement toward free trade has been shown to be beneficial for all nations in the distortion-free world. However, if a country has a distorted factor-market. its optimal trade policy may be an export subsidy rather than a tariff. Furthermore, it has not been shown in the literature that the proposition of mutually beneficial tariff reductions survive the assumption of factor-market distrortions present in one of nations. This paper extends the propositions to the case of factor-market distortions and shows that no perverse output response is sufficient for the movement toward free trade to be beneficial.

    A Strategic Model of Production Location Choice by Incumbents to Entry with Application to the U.S. Automobile Industry
    Jin-Guk Kim
    Pages 177-196
  • Abstract || PDF
    •    This paper describes a game-theoretic model that suggests why the dominant U.S. firms in the U.S automobile industry did not respond to Japanese imports by themselves adding product lines close to the product space location of the Japanese imports. Numerical method is applied to find the solution for additional location by incumbents. Results shows that incumbents do not have incentives to add one more location because of reduced profit which is caused by competition effect and expansion effect. In addition to sunk establishment cost for new location.

    The Primacy and Welfare Costs of the Sub-Optimal Size Distribution of Cities under External Diseconomies
    Seoung Hwan Suh
    Pages 225-246
  • Abstract || PDF
    •    Properties of the optimal size distribution of cities under external diseconomies are derived by using the hierachy model. in which agglomeration economy and the external diseconomy are explicitly considered. As a benchmark case, welfare costs of the sub-optimal size distribution of cities. WC. and the optimal size of the prime city. OSP. without external diseconomies are calculated. Since there are no data for externality costs of cities. WC and OSP under various degree of external diseconomies are obtained by the simulation. General formulate relationg benchmark WC and OSP with those under conjectured of external diseconomies are constructed.
