    • The Trends of the Circle of Economics in Korea and Economics Education in the College of Commerce and Economics of Yonsei University during the 20 Years after the Liberation (1945¢¦1965)
      Jin-A Chung

This study purposed to examine the trends of the circle of economics in Korea during the 20 years after the Liberation, focusing on Economics education in the College of Commerce and Economics of Yonsei University. After the Liberation, the Division of Commerce of Yonhee School was settled into the Department of Economics and Department of Commercial Science under the College of Commerce and Economics in 1950. With the outbreak of the Korean War, which was a collision between the two systems, many economists left the university as they went or were kidnapped to North Korea or for ideological reasons. The College of Commerce and Economics of Yonsei University filled the gap by inviting competent people among its alumni, and the students compensated the loss of class through research activities and seminars led by the Commerce and Economics Research Club Y.S.U. The College of Commerce and Economics of Yonsei University established its self-identify clearly through the reorganization of the college in the late 1950s. As the Washington University Project was promoted in the late 1950s, the College of Commerce and Economics of Yonsei University was finally settled to have the Department of Business Administration that tried to establish the theoretical and practical foundation of business administration by accepting new trends such as American business administration theories, case study-oriented curriculums, and discussion-based teaching methods. And the Department of Economics that pursued ¡°Korean-style economics¡± from a subjective position by analyzing economic issues in Korea positively and critically and suggesting alternatives.

    • The Effects of Free Trade Agreement on Exports
      - Based on South Korea and United States Case -
      Beomsoo Kim, Juyoung Lee

This paper analyzes the effects of Free Trade Agreement(FTA) between South Korea and United States on exports to US using the Difference in Difference estimation. Two separate channels after the implementation of FTA are considered: tariff and non tariff barrier reduction. We use 6 digit HS code trade data between 2009 and 2014. In our sample there are 78 HS codes that experienced tariff reduction out of 146 codes. Non tariff barrier reduction such as expedited custom within 48 hours applied to all traded products. We found that non tariff barrier reduction increased exports more than tariff reduction.

    • Testing the Solow-Swan Growth Model with Time Series Data: Evidence from Asian Developing Countries
      Inyeob Ji

This paper provides results from testing the predictions of the Solow-Swan model using time series data. The primary aim of the paper is to develop empirical versions of the Solow-Swan model that are useful for understanding the growth process of individual economies. A number of time series models derived from the Solow model are presented and then estimated using annual data for India, Indonesia and Japan. We find that the results are largely consistent with the model. However, data give limited support to the model when human capital is included.

    • Rent Dissipation with Productivity, Ability, and Second Instrument in Contests
      Sung-Hoon Park

We consider contests with two players in which each player has the option of using a second instrument to increase his probability of winning a prize. We examine that: (i) who selects the second instrument from players; and (ii) whether the use of the second incurs rent dissipation. To answer (i), we consider two models with the asymmetric ability of contest and the symmetric productivity of effort. The games has two stages. At the first stage, each player decides on the use of the second instrument. At the second stage, each player expends his efforts to win a prize. Solving for subgame-perfect Nash equilibrium (SPNE), we find the following results. At the model with the asymmetric ability, (a) SPNE does not exist and (b) players do not want to use the second instrument. At the model with symmetric productivity, (c) the lower size of the prize has player do not use the second instrument, (d) the higher size and the lower productivity have players select the second, and (e) the higher size and the higher productivity have a player select the second instrument and his rival do not. To answer (ii), rent dissipation obtained by the model with the symmetric productivity is compared to that obtained by Tullock¡¯s. Then, we show that the use of the second instrument may decrease rent dissipation with the higher size of the prize and the higher productivity of effort.
