- The Academic World and Activities of
Choi Ho-chin in the 1930s to 1950s
Jin Seok Oh
This paper examines the academic world and career of Choi
Ho-chin, who had a profound effect on the development of both the
field and the later scholars of Korean economics. Choi Ho-chin was
well-known for keeping his research and lectures against the
influence of both political power and money.
Due to his family background, Choi had anti-Japanese
sentiments from a young age and observed the debate between Kim
Gwang-jin and Paik Nam-woon on the Asiatic mode of production
while studying at Bosung College. He decided to study economic
history and find his own research path. While studying at Kyushu
Imperial University, he switched his major to economics and
pursued a systematic, but comparatively balanced, study of the
main economic theories of the day. Choi Ho-chin was particularly
influenced by his academic adviser, Hatano Kanae, who required
him to closely read The Wealth of Nations and Das Kapital, while
maintaining a balanced perspective in his economic research. The
results of his experience studying abroad were apparent in his work
published in 1942, Modern Joseon Economic History.
After Liberation in 1945, Choi was influenced by Paik Nam-woon
to use his studies and knowledge in contributing to the
establishment of the new nation. Choi Ho-chin participated in the
Joseon Academy and the National Culture Research Institute, as
well as becoming a professor in the department of economics at
Gyeongseong University. He published various economics textbooks
in Korean and continued with his research into Korean economic
history, publishing volume one of his Studies of Modern Joseon
Economic History. In this book, he used the Asiatic mode of
production to explain the "Asian stagnation" of Korean society.
However, his "stagnation theory" was based on a particularly Asian
characteristic, which could be used to challenge the conventional
perspective on the principles of global development. Consequently,
his research influenced scholars in the 1960's who advanced
"internal development theory" in order to overcome his research.

- Some Implications of Max Weber's
The Religion of China for the Korean
Socioeconomic System
Hoon Hong
In interpreting Weber's The Religion of China (Konfuzianismus
und Taoismus) this paper takes note of some of its implications for
the explication of the Korean socioeconomic system. The Western
society derived a generally applicable socio-ethical system from
relations between individuals and a personalized God. On this
basis, it established rational, abstract, impersonal, generally
consistent systems (political, monetary, and legal) under which
human relations are subdued. By contrast, due to her dependence
on agriculture and Confucianism, China was lacking in such an
ethical system and other kinds of impersonal systems, Instead, it
relied on Confucian education, examinations for officials and
personal relations among humans. The interpretation highlights
bureaucracy, relationality, education for entrance examination,
school ties, as major features of Korea. As an extension, it can be
argued that reliance on human relations, combined with emphasis
on entrance examination, gives rise to a specific type of school ties.
Moreover, the significance of human relations which Weber
attributed to East Asia is to be reframed in consideration of the
recent resurgence of social capital and the economics of social
relations, both of which allegedly enhance productivity as well as
welfare and happiness.

- Determinants of the Value-added of the
Korean Banking Industry
Joon Mo Kwon, Kunhong Kim, Young Sik Kim
This study empirically investigated the determinants of the
value-added of Korean banks, considering that the changes in the
internal and external environment since the global financial crisis
have tended to reduce the profitability of the Korean banking
industry. Since the value-added can be decomposed into income
statement components, we considered the characteristics and
trends of the following items that could directly affect the
value-added: market interest rate, total asset value, leverage
ratio, relative weight of loan assets, composition of loan assets,
funding structure, proportion of non-performing loans, income
structure, and the number of branches. Fixed-effects model of
panel data was used in our investigation. According to the
estimation result, soundness of the loan turned out to be the most
important factor that determined the value-added. It is expected
that, if the proportion of the non-performing loan is reduced to half
of the current level, value-added of the domestic banks will be
increased by the maximum of 19%. Macroeconomic variables such
as GDP growth rate and the policy interest rate were also
important. It was also found that the increase in the total value of
assets could have positive effect on the value-added. However, the
effect of the total value of assets on the value-added is considered
to be small because it is accompanied by the rise in the leverage
ratio. Finally, the structure of bank income also affected
value-added. It was found that the value-added was positively
related to the relative weight of non-interest income.

- The Ripple Effects of Deregulation on
Employment, Production, and Exports: The Case of Korean Motorcycle Industry
Donghun Kim, Doowon Lee, Byounghan Ko
This paper analyzed the contribution of the Korean motorcycle
industry to the overall economy in employment, production, and
export, and investigated the industry's export competitiveness
using the revealed comparative advantage. Even though the
economic ripple effects of the motorcycle industry is not small
compared to other transportation industries, the industry's
production and export have been gradually contracted until
recently. Thus, this paper looked into how the deregulation of the
motorcycle highway ban can lead to the revitalization of the
activities of the industry using a counterfactual simulation. It is
projected that motorcycle demand for leisure will increase following
an increase in per capita income in Korea, and its demand for
product distribution will expand as well. So, it is inferred that the
expansion of production through the deregulation on the ban can be
one of policy options to maximize the economic ripple effects and
promote the export competitiveness of the industry.

- Merchants between Empires: The Seoul Kims
and the Internal Origins of Korean Bourgeoisie
Sung-chan Hong
Businesses with more than a century of history are rare in
Korea. Known examples include only a handful of banks and large
conglomerates that have survived since the late 19th or early
20th century. Consequently there is a noticeable lack of the
literature on Korean business history. Given the backdrop, this
research aims to introduce the history of Kim family that engaged
in business for over four generations since the late 19th century
in Jongno, Seoul and Dongmak, at the coast of the Han River. We
intend to show that the bourgeois class of Korea was not a sudden
phenomenon that took place during the colonial period, but that
the class evolved and matured continuously throughout Joseon
Dynasty, the Great Korea Empire and the colonial period of the
Japanese Empire. We demonstrate the internal origins and
continuous nature of Korean capitalism and bourgeois class by
examining the history of Kim family.
