    Cyclicality of Wages, Separations and Unemployment
    Sun-Bin Kim
    Pages 3-35
  • Abstract ( Eng | Kor ) || PDF
    •    We introduce worker differences in labor supply, reflecting difference assets, into a model of separations, matching, and unemployment over the business cycle. Separating from employment when unemployment duration is long is particularly costly for workers with high labor supply. This provides a rich set of testable predictions across workers: those with higher labor supply, say due to lower assets, should display more procyclical wages and less countercyclical separations. Consequently, the model predicts that the pool of unemployed will sort toward workers with lower labor supply in a downturn. Because these workers generate lower rents to employers, this discourages vacancy creation and exacerbates the cyclicality of unemployment and unemployment durations. In SIPP data, we find that wages are much more procyclical while separations from employment are much less cyclical for those who work more. We see a strong compositional shift during recessions among the unemployed toward workers who typically work less.

    Do Trade Costs Affect the Factor Content of Trade?
    Yeon Joon Kim
    Pages 37-60
  • Abstract ( Eng | Kor ) || PDF
    •    This paper expands upon the original HOV model by considering trade costs. It deduces the original HOV model with trade costs and compares it with the HOV model without trade costs. It does so by including trade costs directly in the technology matrix, where the working assumption is that the trade costs are located in the original country. Additionally, this paper includes trade costs directly in the vector of the net exports. This paper concludes that the original HOV model with trade costs achieves better results than the model without trade costs using the data constructed for the purpose of this paper. These test results show that trade costs play an important role in explaining the factor content of trade.

    Revisiting Number Portability and Switching Cost from the Experience of South Korean Mobile Operator
    Joon Young Kim
    Pages 61-88
  • Abstract ( Eng | Kor ) || PDF
    •    Many mobile phone subscribers have their own experience of switching from one network to the other. Introduction of Mobile Number Portability (MNP) in the Korean mobile market back in 2004 was believed to lower the switching costs of subscribers. This study reveals that subscribers perceive the switching cost still high, discouraging them from switching carriers. While MNP lowered switching costs considerably, a significant level of switching costs still remains despite MNP. Carriers develop new lock-in strategies that make them stay with current carriers. In addition, there are hidden costs other than MNP that should burden subscribers with.

    • Consumer Preference Analysis on 3G Upgrade and Wi-Fi
      Doosoo Pak, Imho Kang

         This paper tries to find out the consumer preference for the data transmission method of Wi-Fi and 3G network upgrade, employing conjoint analysis. The results are as follows. First, based on ordered choice model, the probability that the representative consumer will most prefer 3G upgrade (HSDPA in Korea), Wi-Fi service, and the mixed service with the both is 36 percent, 20 percent and 27 percent, respectively. This means that if a telecommunication company will select 3G upgrade of HSDPA if it has to choose one out of the two. Second, if there does not exist the mixed service of Wi-Fi and HSDPA, then 41% of consumers will choose the former, and 59% the latter. If there is, then 73.6% of consumers will use HSDPA. This means that the number of consumers using HSDPA will go up if the mixed service is provided.

    • Uncertainty, Convention and Economic Policy: Keynes and Post Keynesians
      Jaehong Hwang

         The purpose of this paper is to examine the logical link between uncertainty and policy intervention. It is generally recognized that Keynes provided the theoretical foundation for government intervention in the economy. Post Keynesian regards fundamental uncertainty as the defining characteristics of Keynes's economics. It is important to clarify the logical link between uncertainty and policy intervention for the consistency of Keynes's theoretical system. However, there are many problems in the logical link. This paper examines the post Keynesian research on this theme and shows the problems to be solved.

    • Universal Darwinism and the Evolutionary Theory of the Firm
      Pil Kyoo Jo

         The characteristic of the universal Darwinism is that it intends to demonstrate the ontological basis of Darwinian principles of variation, selection and replication in all the evolutionary system. That is, there are process of economic evolution going that exhibit the same essential abstract features as Darwinian evolutionary process in biology.
         Variation, selection and replication can be identified in socio-economic system, but they are not necessarily Darwinian since there is another evolutionary mechanism of adaptive learning, which cannot be elucidated in terms of Darwinian principles, in addition to Darwinian mechanism. Hence, universal Darwinism cannot give the universal explanatory scheme comprehending socio-economic and biological system.
